[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Matsukaze Tenma
Age: Assumed to be 13, and he appears 13 as well.
Gender: male
Canon: Inazuma Eleven GO
Timeline: Episode 37
Character History:
Matsukaze Tenma is a first year attending Raimon Middle School. He grew up with his family in Okinawa and it was there that Tenma's dream to play soccer was born. In an effort to save a puppy from some very scary falling wooden boards, little Tenma instead found himself in danger. Luckily Raimon's ace shooter Gouenji Shuuya saw him and was able to deliver a strong kick and save Tenma and the puppy. The puppy has since been named Sasuke and now lives with Tenma (though not a puppy any longer) and Tenma held onto the soccer ball that saved him. The soccer ball had a lightning bolt drawn onto it- Raimon Middle School's symbol- and from that point it has been Tenma's dream to play soccer in Raimon's soccer club.
After getting into Raimon Middle School, it was his enthusiasm, rather than skill, that initially got Tenma and Nishizono Shinsuke into their succer club. Due to the club's suddenly low enrollment, both Tenma and Shinsuke get onto the first team, spots reserved usually for the best second and third years. Regularly the team holds quite high standards, having come second in the Holy Road competition during the previous year. Tenma wears the number 8 jersey and his main position is midfielder, but has on occasion played as goal keeper, and wears number 18 when he does- his ability and experience playing both offensively and defensively and even as keeper makes him perhaps the most versatile player on his team.
Although it is his enthusiasm for the sport that earns him a spot on the team, Tenma is naturally very good at the sport and learns quite quickly. Tenma may have shown up at the soccer club on his first day at Raimon with minimal soccer experience (he had practiced mostly by himself until then, since being unable to meet the standards for his elementary school team), he manages to make it onto the team. Early on, his best skill was dribbling the ball- but a natural ability at soccer meant that he was able to progress rapidly. Even when he becomes a very important player in the Raimon team as a first year, he is modest about it. Tenma is genuinely proud of his teammates and impressed with their abilities, and he always strives to become a better player himself. Tenma is often found with Shinsuke post-game sharing in the excitement over the playing of both Raimon and the other team.
Tenma is so passionate about soccer that he is willing to put a whole lot on the line for the sport. When he first requests admission into the Raimon soccer club he is introduced to the dark underbelly of the middle school soccer club world. Soccer for middle school students is not nearly as fun and free as Tenma had ever anticipated all thanks to an organization called Fifth Sector. Fifth Sector is a quiet but powerful group that is now responsible for deciding which teams win and lose. Fifth Sector grew with the popularity for youth soccer in Japan. After Inazuma Japan won the Football Frontier International Tournament ten years prior, the sport became popular across the nation. Middle schools' reputations became dependent on the standings of their soccer teams. Fifth Sector steps in to regulate soccer matches through prescribed scores under the philosophy that it means that anyone has a chance to win at soccer if they behave well.
But Fifth Sector's soccer is filled with trickery and violence. Its players are called SEEDs and they infiltrate regular soccer teams that don't play according to Fifth Sector's will. They attempt to pull apart teams either by force or by breaking the team internally. Raimon's rebellious coach is the reason that Fifth Sector's Tsurugi Kyousuke is sent to crush the team. The soccer club seems to be at its breaking point just as Tenma arrives, and slowly he manages to raise the spirits of its remaining members and does revive the team. Tenma is the key to Raimon's spirit of resistance against Fifth Sector, believing so strongly in his own opinions of how soccer should be played.
Currently, Tenma and the rest of the Raimon team is working their way up the Holy Road tournament. According to Fifth Sector, Raimon was not supposed to be wiped out in the tournament early on. With Tenma urging the team to fight the prescribed scores, they go on to win and are now just one game away from the final match.
Raimon does in the end come out on top in the Holy Road soccer tournament with Tenma leading them as captain in the final match. Fifth Sector is no longer an issue for middle school soccer and soccer players all over Japan can go back to enjoying soccer as it should be enjoyed.
But just because Fifth Sector is out of the picture doesn't mean soccer is safe!!!!!!!
Shortly after Raimon wins Holy Road, Tenma is faced with a whole new challenge: a mysterious boy named Alpha who has the power to travel through time and space confronts Tenma. He and the organization he stands with, Protocol Omega, aim to erase soccer from history. Tenma is helped by another mysterious boy from the future, Fei Rune, and a talking stuffed bear named Clark Wonderbot. Together they travel through time and space to correct all the alterations made by Protocol Omega in the past. In their present adventure Tenma is faced with a number of tough situations, including finding himself in a present where none of his soccer team knows who he is or plays soccer at all, or finding a world where soccer playing has become outlawed. Presently he is trying to correct a timeline where Endou has become nonexistent- to correct this he is traveling through time and space with Fei Rune and the others to try to improve their soccer playing abilities and defeat Protocol Omega.
((also, if it's helpful for you guys to have, Tenma at the Inazuma Eleven wikia.))
Character Personality:
The most important thing to know about Matsukaze Tenma? That, gosh, this kid sure does love soccer. Really. To the point that all of his hopes and dreams revolve around becoming a soccer player. Since being saved at a young age by a soccer ball with a lightning bolt drawn onto it, it has been his dream to play in Raimon Middle School's soccer club.
Tenma shares his enthusiasm for soccer with Endou Mamoru. Endou had been the goalkeeper and captain of victorious Inazuma Japan and for a period of time coaches Raimon's soccer team. The two of them both have a passion for soccer that doesn't allow them to see it as just a game. For these soccer freaks, it's a way of life. Not being able to play an honest game of soccer for both Tenma and Endou is unacceptable and they both insist on overturning any Fifth Sector policy that denies soccer's integrity. People that knew Endou themselves (first Coach Kudou and Haruna, who experience first hand Tenma's excitement for soccer the very first day he shows up to join the club) recognizes the similarity between them, and perhaps because of that Tenma is so easily accepted into the Raimon team by the coach and counselor.
For Endou, loving soccer and enjoying the game is more important than being talented and winning games. Winning is great and all, but there's no shame in playing and losing to a team that might be even better than your own. Rather than just a loss that experience becomes an opportunity to learn a new kind of soccer. Tenma would agree with his coach completely. Because they both have such strong feelings for soccer, Tenma looks up to Endou as a player.
Both of them also, but Tenma especially, refer to soccer as if it were a thinking, feeling being. He pretty often says that soccer is sad or crying when people aren't playing soccer honestly and all-inclusively.
Because of that spirit, Tenma has no problem getting along with just about anybody. He puts his faith in people to do the right thing. Most notable is his optimism when it comes to dealing with SEEDs- most importantly his teammate Tsurugi Kyousuke. Tsurugi is a first year on the team but joined under very different circumstances than Tenma. As a SEED, Tsurugi was placed in Raimon's team mostly to keep an eye on their coach, Kudou Michiya. To make his point, Tsurugi takes out Raimon's second team single-handedly. The fear that ripples through the soccer club that Fifth Sector will destroy their soccer is enough for all but some members of the first team to disband. Tenma (and Shinsuke) of course join the team anyways. And despite Tsurugi's initial bad intentions, Tenma is the first member of the team to forgive Tsurugi and to trust him as a teammate.
Tsurugi is also one of the first non-coaches to recognize Tenma's potential as a player. Tsurugi on occasion takes it upon himself as the most powerful player on the team to practice one-on-one with Tenma with the intention of drawing out Tenma's abilities. It's usually quite rare to actually find Tsurugi so interested in another player, especially early on, but Tenma manages to be something special. To be noticed in the eyes of an ex-SEED like Tsurugi, who is used to being surrounded by talent as a member of Fifth Sector's force, is pretty significant and confirms that Tenma does have potential to be a great player.
Tenma is very good at recognizing the best parts of a person's personality and actions and it becomes the base that he uses to judge them. Tsurugi isn't an exception in his ability to trust in Fifth Sector's SEEDs. SEEDs in other teams aren't necessarily enemies to Tenma either. Everyone has a reason for their situation they're in. Their situation can always change, as well as their spirit. Tenma allows himself to judge through someone's soccer playing rather than a bad attitude or their being in a compromised position. It's Tenma's positive attitude that allows teammates and challengers to play at their best- and it's Tenma's honest and passionate soccer that almost always brings out the best in others. He says, "Even if they're strangers, you can quickly become friends after standing on the same grounds and chasing the ball together."
The thing that he becomes so conflicted by is when the idea is brought to him that even though soccer can bring people together, it can also bring people apart- because soccer games for people who are inexperienced or sick can't bring happiness. Tenma is told "There are those who can't win no matter how hard they try. Those people lose all hope for soccer and end up turning away from it," and is confronted by being asked to consider how horrible it would be to never be able to play soccer again. This is the idea behind Fifth Sector and it's not until he's really forced to that he realizes what he's fighting against. *Although this particular example is past this Tenma's timeline, it is an important moment for Tenma. The real force of this idea, that soccer is not all fun and games, hits him hardest when he finds himself in a soccer match against a good friend, Amemiya Taiyou, who happens to also be quite sick. Watching his friend be in so much pain affects him emotionally to the point that it affects his soccer playing. While most of the team seems to brush the moment off as just a missed shot, Tsurugi confronts him about it. Tenma's feelings for his friend are costing him his own ability to be honest about his soccer playing. As unfortunate as Taiyou's situation is, Tenma is not playing a fair game against his friend, who in the end with the help of his teammates puts up an excellent fight right up to the finish of the game. It only furthers his resolve to beat Fifth Sector, who would dare to cheat someone like Taiyou out of a good game when he has so much on the line.
In his fight against Fifth Sector, it's not Tenma's intention to deny soccer to anyone. In the end he decides for himself that Fifth Sector is cheating even people who are unable to play from experiencing true soccer. The game isn't about winning or losing- it's about the friendships you make and challenges you overcome with other players.
But even worse for Tenma is when Fifth Sector even more aggressively tries to take back soccer. Even though it's a sign that Fifth Sector is becoming desperate to take back its soccer, Tenma feels bad about it. As such an important member in the revolution against them, Tenma becomes quite depressed when Fifth Sector begins abolishing soccer teams as the spirit of rebellion against Fifth Sector spreads from Raimon to other middle schools. He on occasion is told things like, "it's all because of the wind you started, Tenma". The idea that so many middle school students are finding themselves in trouble because of something he started scares him, even- especially when Raimon seems to be spared from punishment.
It's during this important moment for Tenma that he meets Ishido Shuuji, the leader of Fifth Sector. The Holy Emperor acknowledges Tenma as the one that spurred changed, and blames Tenma for the actions that Fifth Sector has to take in defense. And it's also at that moment that Ishido Shuuji is revealed to be none other than the person responsible for saving Tenma as a child with his strong kick and planting that dream in Tenma's mind to become a soccer player for Raimon. The realization that someone who loves soccer so much could do something so horrible to soccer crushes Tenma's spirit.
The reality and confusion over the situation is scary for Tenma, but the fighting spirit of his teammates is still quite strong. With the support of his teammates, Tenma manages to pull out of his slump and revive his enthusiasm about freeing soccer. Team captain, Shindou, is especially supportive in the situation, telling Tenma that they have to keep fighting (and to "stir up a bigger wind") if they want to free soccer players from Fifth Sector's bogus rules.
These are all short lived drawbacks for Tenma's usually cheerful personality. Tenma's ability to bounce back after difficult situations is maybe unusual but also impressive. It never takes long for him to overcome his own doubts. However his experiences show that he can't do it all by himself. Tenma might be cheerful even all by himself but it doesn't mean he doesn't ever rely on the support of his friends.
But Tenma of course gives out plenty of support to his friends and teammates as well. He might not be the best player on the team but he is always ready to help them during practice. Tenma is very friendly and helpful to new students and new members to the club. When the new members Kariya Masaki and Kageyama Hikaru transfer into the school and join the team, Tenma is the first to welcome and accept them. Kariya comes to the team with plenty of experience and knowledge of the sport, but Kageyama joins as a true beginner. Tenma and the other first years on the team are quite close and are always ready to help each other out, no matter what their skill level. Tenma himself says that it takes all sorts of players to make up a team.
Tenma isn't alone in the team as someone that is always willing to help his teammates improve. Also, his ability to bond with the members of other teams through his soccer mean that Tenma and the rest of Raimon has the benefit of the experience and feelings of soccer players outside their own team.
And he of course doesn't try to help just on the field. Most importantly was his ability to restore the will to play free soccer to Shindou Takuto. As captain of Raimon's first team, without him Tenma wouldn't have been able to rally the support of the other players as well. It's because of Tenma's first ability to win over Shindou that the rest of the team slowly became motivated to win the Holy Road championship and take soccer back from Fifth Sector.
As he becomes a more experienced soccer player, Tenma learns how to become a true leader. When captain Shindou Takuto is hospitalized in the semi-final match, the team agrees that Tenma should be the player that takes his place as captain. Tenma accepts the position and is very humble about it. He accepts from the beginning that it will be a challenge for him to lead Raimon in the final game but tries his best to make up for Shindou's absence. The team follows Tenma's orders and suggestions despite his inexperience as captain.
Even after winning in the Holy Road tournament with his team, Tenma does find himself in situations where he remains captain. When playing with Fei Rune he captains their team (named Tenmas). But after Shindou Takuto returns to soccer Tenma is more than happy to return the captain position to his senpai.
Even non-soccer players seem to rally behind Tenma's passion for soccer. The girls that become Raimon's managers owe it to Tenma for wanting to be apart of the team at all (maybe with the exception of Akane, who has a crush on team captain Shindou Takuto). Aoi is Tenma's childhood friend and she is very supportive of him. Midori is an upperclassmen that mostly just seems inspired by his spirit and rallies behind him to bring the team together.
If that's not enough, Tenma tends to get along with animals as well. He has a dog called Sasuke that he has taken care of since he was little. Sasuke was even part of that important moment in Tenma's childhood when he was saved by a soccer ball.
Tenma is also sought out specifically by Fei Rune as he is traveling through time trying to save soccer. Even 200 years in the future people know that no one loves soccer more than Matsukaze Tenma.
And finally, even though this kid is pretty great and all, Tenma can be sometimes be kind of absentminded and is sort of a ditz. He probably owes this to his naturally being so happy-go-lucky. And as far as his academics go, it's uncertain how he does but it might be assumed that he's no shining star in the classroom. When shown scenes that take place in class, Tenma often seems preoccupied over a new technique or a big game. Soccer seems to take priority over his schoolwork.
Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
Besides his knack for soccer and versatility as a player, Tenma has a collection of "hissatsu" techniques at his disposal. Soccer players in the Inazuma canon are backed by an element, and of course Tenma's is wind. All of his hissatsu techniques are wind themed. The first hissatsu technique he learns is Soyokaze Step, where Tenma uses the power of the wind to step around a defending opponent in order to maintain ball possession. One of his defensive techniques is Spiral Draw, where he surrounds an opponent with a whirlwind to take the ball for himself.
As Tenma progresses though he even develops hissatsu techniques for shooting, his first being a technique called Mach Wind. Basically, it's a shoot that has a powerful wind energy surrounding it- stronger than just a regular shoot.
Also, teammates are able to work together and stack shots on top of each other to increase their strength. Tenma does this at one point with Raimon player Kurama, stacking Tenma's Mach Wind with Kurama's Side-winder, allowing to overcome their opposition's goalkeeper.
Although Tenma doesn't and would never use his hissatsu techniques for anything other than a game of soccer, the Aleia Academy students of the original Inazuma Eleven series and SEEDs like Tsurugi show that hissatsu techniques can be used to stir up bigger trouble. The Aleia Academy soccer players were capable of doing enough damage that they were almost more a terrorist group than a soccer team. The techniques hold incredible power and if used a certain way can be incredibly dangerous.
After hissatsu techniques are hissatsu tactics. These are techniques that require several members of a team to complete. Among the ones that Tenma participates in with the rest of his team is a tactics called Double Wing, where two groups of Raimon's fastest strikers pass between each other in efforts to fool the opposing team. Another offensive tactics that Tenma participates in is one called Flying Route Pass. It is a tactic where players must make all their passes without the ball touching the ground.
Tenma is also able to use an avatar (or "keshin"). Tenma's avatar's name is Majin Pegasus and looks like a big demon god with big red feathered wings (here is a picture!). The presence of Tenma's activated avatar increases his power as a player. Tenma's avatar was actually first activated when he was chosen to play as Raimon's goalkeeper. Tenma very rarely plays goalkeeper but the pressure to defend was able to awaken the sleeping power within him. Tsurugi was the first to recognize Tenma's potential to draw out an avatar.
Tenma is also now able to use an ability called Avatar Armed. He summons Majin Pegasus Arc (an upgraded version of his original avatar) and then equips his avatar. By doing so he and his avatar become even more closely linked and makes him an even better soccer player.
Also, Fei Rune and Wonderbot introduce a piece of technology from the future known as the Mixi Max Gun. This gun is used to transfer the powers from one thing to another. Tenma is Mixi Maxed with a boy named Shuu, who actually made his first appearance in the Inazuma Eleven Go movie. When Tenma is Mixi Max'd with Shuu his appearance changes and he becomes physically stronger for a short period of time. Tenma isn't able to use this ability on his own- the Mixi Max Gun must be used mid-game.
Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
Tenma has no physical weaknesses to speak of. He does however sometimes get carried away practicing or trying to perfect a new technique that he might injure himself. It's never serious though, and he seems to know his own limits.
Also Tenma is perhaps a little naive and it could potentially get him into trouble. For always being so optimistic, disappointment can hit Tenma hard. Even so, he manages to bounce back relatively quickly and is usually stronger for it.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign?
Tenma's hissatsu techniques and his ability to call his avatar will be lost, but his physical endurance and talent for soccer will remain. Even without fancy wind-powered hissatsu techniques he would remain a pretty good soccer player.
What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
As a regular middle school kid who has nothing but a regular old soccer ball at his disposal, it seems unfair for him to take on further weaknesses.
The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
If a kid like Tenma is being placed in Death City it would obviously be to bring the joy of soccer to the city! There might not be a better candidate to pick to be responsible for that, too. What better way to fight off Madness than a super fun game of soccer?
If your character has difficulty verbally communicating or can’t verbally communicate at all (mute or non-humanoid), elaborate on how this will be treated in the game.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?
Tenma is better suited to be a Meister because of his ability to work so well with other people. He is someone that most people are able to trust easily, and he easily places trust in others as well. He has a natural aptitude for leading it seems as well, finding himself among the most important participants of a soccer revolution.
What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
Soul Blitz, because this kid is pretty good at and sure loves kicking balls.
Soul Excitement, because his upbeat and enthusiastic attitude is perfect for raising the confidence of his teammates.
Soul BFF, because turning strangers into friends comes so easily to him.
